What: Appalachian Chapter of Trout Unlimited Meeting Where: Greenway Farm off of Gann Store Road in Hixson When: Thursday, November 19th, at 6:30 PM
“An Evening with Walter Babb”
Walter Babb will be our special guest for the November meeting. As many of you already know, Walter is a highly respected fly fishing angler who knows how to accurately evaluate a wide variety of fishing situations and proceed in a way that often ends in success. Some people consider Walter to be one of the most skilled anglers to fish for those elusive trout in the Smoky Mountains. Without a doubt, he is a well-spring of information about fly fishing, from one’s choice of tackle, flies, and weight, to one’s approach, positioning and casting technique. Walter will be tying some of his trademark flies while discussing how, when, and where to fish them. So, you may wish to attend this meeting, prepared to take written notes. He is also a well respected bamboo rod maker, and may talk about these activities with us as well. Walter is a frequently sought after fly fishing and fly tying instructor at Little River Outfitters in Townsend, Tennessee. He is a very interesting storyteller, as he knows a lot of the history related to various fishing locations, anglers, flies, and fly fishing tackle. He also can provide some interesting tales about how he originally tied flies “back in the old days,” without the use of specialized fly tying tools, such as bobbins. Mark your calendars now to be sure to catch the fly fishing wisdom of this amazing gentleman. Snacks and drinks will be provided. |

The 20th annual Tellico Brook Trout monitoring project will held Saturday, October 17 at 9:00am at the Spivey Cove Campground. Breakfast will be served by TU beginning at 8:00am. The Spivey Cove Campground will be reserved for Friday night through Saturday afternoon at no charge for partners participating in this program. We will be electrofishing in Rough Ridge Creek, McNabb Creek, and Big Cove Branch. I expect to have the surveys completed by 3:00. Fall colors should add to enjoyment of this historic partnership project.
To get to Spivey Cove Campground from Tellico Plains (from the junction with Hwy 360) travel east on Hwy 165 (Cherohala Skyway) for 4.3 miles. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 210 which goes toward Bald River Falls and stays close to the Tellico River. Follow FSR210 for about 12 miles; turn left into the Spivey Cove Campground. |

What: Appalachian Chapter of Trout Unlimited Meeting Where: Greenway Farm off of Gann Store Road in Hixson When: Thursday, October 15th, at 6:30 PM
NOTE: Last month the Greenway Farm club house was locked. Since then, we have talked with the powers that be, have contact info, and have keys for the building in the event it isn't open. We apologize for the confusion. Fly Fishing the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia
Lory Heron and Jenise Gordon will be presenting on their fishing trip to the Kamchatka Penisula in Russia. Lory has been fishing all her life and fly fishing for the last 15 years. She has fished throughout the states, Alaska and last summer in the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. Professionally, she is a national science consultant for a publishing company. She spends about 80% of her time traveling for her job, working with science teachers as they select textbooks for classroom use. She has twenty years experience teaching high school science, mainly physics and chemistry, and has been an adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University. She has lived in Chattanooga for the past three years. Jenise Gordon will also be presenting along with Lory. Jenise is a biology teacher at Girl's Preparatory School here in Chattanooga. She grew up on the waters of west Tennessee fishing with her family. She has been fly fishing for about five years and has made the twenty inch club with South Eastern Anglers for the last three years. They both have some great stories to share and Jenise is reportedly a rather comedic entertainer. They both look forward to this evening of reliving the wonderful time they had fishing the Kamchatka Penisula. This should prove to be a very interesting presentation, so plan ahead to be there. Snacks and drinks will be provided. |
