Annual Brook Trout Survey at Tellico
( Written by Robert Wilson )
Sunday, 13 August 2006
Volunteers Needed! The Appalachian Chapter and volunteers from other chapters and organizations will work with Jim Herrig from the National Forrest Service on the annual Brook Trout survey on Saturday, August 26th at 9:00 AM. We will meet at McNabb Campground off of North River Road. Although physically challenging, the rewards are great. You'll learn about electrofishing, meet some great people, and see a large number of Brook Trout. Generally, Jim does a brief presentation on what we hope to accomplish, we split into four teams, and head off to electrofish four streams. This is one time where it isn't a good idea to wet wade, so bring your waders!McNabb Campground will be open for all TU members wanting to camp on the nights of Fri. Aug.25 and Sat. Aug.26 and ACTU will host breakfast between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM on Saturday. If you want to stay longer and camp and fish later Saturday and Sunday, plan on camping.

Meadow Branch - August 2006 Stream of the Month
( Written by Jim Herrig )
Monday, 14 August 2006
Abstract: Meadow Branch is a tributary stream to North River in the Cherokee National Forest (Big Junction Quad Map). It has stretches that are difficult to access but also an area that is easily accessed. The difficult stretches do not have a trail associated with them. Brook trout dominate the entire stream but rainbow trout are present in the lowest stretch. Meadow Branch is a beautiful stream that requires some climbing in a remote setting but also an area that is right beside the road.

Several Appalachian chapter members are planning on attending. You are welcome to attend this event. The principle point is to keep each other informed. We talk about the current state of coldwater fisheries, and often have people invited to talk about a current problem. This year, I expect to show the first cut of the Back the Brookies DVD.The Summer State Council meeting will be held in the afternoon, and the agenda includes council elections, and discussing a strategy for re-chartering all Tennessee Chapters (pursuant to the Chapter Focus Prject and the CEI that each chapter filled out last year)."

Searching for a Bull Trout
( Written by Robert Wilson )
Sunday, 13 August 2006
For the last 10 years Ive been engaged in a quest to catch all the species of trout native to North America. Why? I dont know exactly. I guess one reason is because I like to travel to different areas and luckily our native trout live in many of the most beautiful spots our country has to offer. Another is that I simply admire the beauty of the trout in all its various forms. From the iridescent bluish flanks of the Bonneville cutthroat to the golden hues of the Apache trout, it has been a privilege to hold each jewel in my hand, if only for a moment. And finally I guess it is a way to add a sense of accomplishment to an activity I enjoy. My days of fly fishing for trout are imbued with a sense of higher purpose and I am forced by this endeavor to support conservation efforts for all our trout species but especially those that are most endangered.

A Simple Stripping Basket
( Written by Robert Wilson )
Sunday, 13 August 2006
I have been fishing the rip-rap below the dam at Chickamauga quite frequently. I have been having luck with Skipjacks, small bass and a few stripers. The limestone rocks that line the bank are a challenge to walk down and also present a problem when it comes to line management. The flyline seems to get tangled in every possible nook and cranny of the rocks. I decided that a stripping basket was in order.

Fishing Report: Summer BWOs on the Hiwassee
( Written by Robert Wilson )
Sunday, 30 July 2006
I have been over to the Hiwassee several times the last few weeks with good success. There are plenty of fresh, but small, stockers ranging from about 8 to 12 and they are hungry. I think they really miss the puppy chow!
