October 2006 Chapter Meeting

What: Appalachian Chapter of Trout Unlimited Monthly Meeting
Where: Greenway Farm off of Gann Store Road in Hixson
When: October 19th, at 6:30 PM
Why: Wendy Williams will present her Canada fishing trip.

On August 13th-18th, Wendy Williams fished the Highwood River in Canada. At this month's meeting, she'll discuss the types of fish she caught, the guide service she used, and her accomodations. She'll have photos and brochures from this beautiful area and of course some stories of the ones she caught and the big ones that got away.

Chapter Elections

Last month, the chapter held its annual elections. I have enjoyed the year as President and am excited about the upcoming year's leadership. These leaders have served on the board and/or held leadership positions in our chapter and other organizations. This year's President is Robert Prytula, the Vice President is Roger Duckworth, the Treasurer is Wendy Williams, and the Secretary is Brian Hanks. Thanks to the board for their support and to the new leadership for volunteering.-Robert Wilson

Just in case

I was intrigued by Six Flies Revisited by John Berry in the August 2006 issue of Tight Lines and Tall Tails. Having been guided by John, I can personally attest to his knowledge of the rivers and fly patterns for Arkansas. This article made me think, which is exactly what a well-written column is supposed to do. The reason this article by Mr. Berry stuck a chord with me is because of the simplicity and reorganization of the fly selection for maximum efficiency. These are the productive patterns that will work on the Norfork and White. John has streamlined his fly box to carry essential flies, totaling six patterns, which will work for the area waters he fishes and guides. I figured I would take his advice and look into doing the same with both my fly boxes and vest. Get organized and simplify.

Abstract: Falls Branch is a tributary stream to Citico Creek in the Citico Creek Wilderness Area of the Cherokee National Forest (Whiteoak Flats and Big Junction Quad Map). It has stretches that are difficult to access but also an area that is easily accessed. The difficult stretches do not have a trail associated with them. Brook trout are present in the entire stream but rainbow trout dominate in the lower stretches. Falls Branch is a beautiful stream with a spectacular waterfall and many large, old growth trees.

The Old and the New

( Written by Robert Prytula)
Sunday, 15 October 2006

As I read the latest edition of Long Casts, I noticed the theme of this year’s conclave, “Today’s Youth, Tomorrow’s Fly Fisher.” This title started me on a trip down memory lane. I began to think about my experiences fly fishing, how things have progressed and how things have changed since I began fly fishing.
