ImageOn May 27th, Greg Fairchild, Jim Herrig, Sandy Macey, and Robert Wilson attended chainsaw training at the Ocoee Ranger Station. This training certifies them as Level A chainsaw operators which will allow them to operate chainsaws in the National Forest. These skills will be used to trim overgrown rhododendron which causes streams to flood their banks, resulting in stream siltation.

Trimming rhododendron on Big Cove Branch showed a dramatic increase in the number of fish over a year's period of time. Other benefits are the rhododendron bloom as a result of the sunlight and anglers can actually fish the stream! We will continue to monitor Big Cove Branch and trim a few more streams to see if these benefits are reproducible.
