TU's Angling Ambassador Visit's McNabb and the Hiwassee Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 May 2006
ImageLuca Adelfio is traveling the country, trying to fish the  "100 Best Trout Streams" as defined in John Ross' book and learn about TU chapters' conservation efforts. We were lucky enough to have Luca visit with members of the Hiwassee, Little River, and Appalachian Chapters of TU during his trip.

Don and Beverly from the Hiwassee chapter, Gary from the Little River chapter, and Robert and Jim from the Appalachian chapter met in Tellico Plains. Luca wanted to learn about McNabb Creek and its restoration efforts. We discussed the road building that destroyed the fish in McNabb and the process taken to bring it back to life. Then we drove to McNabb's headwaters where acidic water seeps from the rocks and into McNabb. Jim discussed the death of McNabb, its slow rebirth, and the attempts to help by placing lime sand into the water to help neutralize the acidic water.

We then drove down North River Road, stopping to let Luca try to catch a brookie. He had one on for a second but it was a quick release. Gary took Robert to a spring to look at some interesting caddis casings. Gary explained that caddis generally make their casings out of leaves and twigs. The caddis in this spring used what looked like sand and flat pieces of slate to build their casings.  We continued down North River road, stopping at McNabb Creek, just before it entered the North River. We walked along McNabb, taking pictures in the process.

At that point, Beverly, Don, and Luca headed to the Hiwassee. After taking a long bypass because of a cabin in the road (don't ask), they were able to fish the Hiwassee for a little while. They caught a few, Luca said bye and headed further North.
