Fall Fishing Comes Early?Must be Global Warming? Print E-mail

Late August and the Fall fishing cycle has started on the Taccoa.? My brother Larry drove up from Suwanee and I, with my Britt, Bama, drove from Ooltewah.? We met at 8:30 on the river and discussed tactics. It was late Summer and we expected that the fish would be on a midge diet so we were prepared to throw the really tiny stuff.?

As we walked upstream the slight cloud cover thickened as the temperature hovered at about a muggy 74 degrees.?? The clouds were from the outer cloud bands of tropical storm Fay which dumped inches of rain on Florida.? The water temperature was about 60 degrees with a 10 knot wind coming out of the East?which is rare.? Due to the wind, both of us were throwing Sage SP 4wts matched with light Lamson reels.?

We were both trying out some new furled leaders that I had made earlier in the week.? They were 5ft leaders tied to 4x/5x/6x totaling about 10ft.? The verdict:? they cast and rolled over great and floaedt well but seemed a little more difficult to mend than the poly leaders we usually fish.? Making furled leaders is easy and there are numerous web sites that explain the process.?? Do a Google search and you will find several different articles.? I will also be demonstrating the process at the Appalachian TU October meeting.?

I started with a #18 Sulpher with a #20 Griffiths Gnat dropper.?? I tie my tippet section using a triple Surgeon?s Knot and leave one but end of about 6 inches.?? I tie the upper fly here (usually the better floater) and tie the dropper to the end of the 18 inch tippet.? I scored pretty quickly on the Sulpher and had some rises to the Gnat but fishing was slow for the first hour.? About 10:00 a slight drizzle started and I saw two BWO?s come off.? I shouted to my brother to switch to BWO emergers with droppers.?? The next two hours were great, classic Fall fishing.??? Larry was at the head of a large pool with many trout rising below him.? He caught trout after trout on a BWO bead head flash back dropper and a few on a Duck?s Yellow Post Emerger that I tie.?

I was above him, in faster water.? I picked up several myself but, in the faster water, most hit the DYPE though a few, and my largest brown, was on the #20 bead head BWO flash back that Larry had given me.? Most of our fish were in the 10-13 inch range and were browns and a few rainbows.? We caught no brookies (stockers) this trip.?

I fished down to my brother and watched him whip a hard fighting 15? brown and we called it a day.? Another great day?but any day fishing with my brother is a great day.?
