Cool Clean Learning Fun Print E-mail
Monday, 12 June 2006

Image On June 3rd, several members of the Appalachian Chapter and a couple from the Nashville area met up on the Conasauga River. Jim Herrig and Petra Setlich from the National Forest Service graciously volunteered their Saturday to taking us snorkeling on the river. We started with a  short class on the fish species available in the Conasauga watershed. Its 70+ species far outnumbers the species in the Colorado River and other western watersheds, which is interesting based on its small size in comparison to he western streams. This shows that this system is old and diverse.

Image At 11:00 AM on June 3rd, Jim Herrig, a fisheries biologist with the National Forest Service and member of the Applachian Chapter of TU, will lead a snorkeling trip on the Conasauga River. Those interested in attending need to bring swimming suits, wading shoes (or old shoes/sandals), towels, lunches, and water to drink. Changing tents will be provided as well as all gear needed for snorkeling. The wet suits fit people that are around 12 years old and up. On a recent trip, the water was 57 degrees. Hopefully it will warm up some by the 3rd!

Appalachian and Hiwassee Chapter Teach Fly Fishing Print E-mail
Friday, 12 May 2006

Image Greg Fairchild and Charlie Bagley from the Appalachian Chapter along with Ty Goodwin from the Hiwassee Chapter taught fly fishing at a recent Boy Scout Merit Badge College. The boys learned various aspects of fly fishing inline with the requiments for the fly fishing merit badge. After learning the fundamentals of gear, fly tying, and casting, the young men were given the opportunity to try out their new skills at a trout pond. For some, this was their first fishing experience and the smiles on their faces showed how much they enjoyed catching their first fish. Four boys earned their merit fly fishing merit badge. Thanks to Greg, Charlie and Ty for their efforts.

Image Trout Unlimited chapters can have several youth education programs, including the First Cast, the Boy Scout Fly Fishing Merit Badge, Conservation and Fish Camp, and Trout in the Classroom programs developed by Trout Unlimited or programs developed locally.

Our chapter has utilized the Boy Scout Merit Badge Program over the last few years as several members are involved in TU and the BSA programs. As our chapter grows, we hope to include more TU programs in our curriculum.
