Fishing For Trout in Smoky Mountain Streams

Some know this month’s presenter as “Spider Man” as he is a very accomplished fly tier.  Dave Carson spoke to our group last year and made such an impact, he has been asked back, In Spite of Popular Demand!  Just Joking!  Really, Dave Carson, was a real hit among our members last year and promises to be so again this year.  At least that is what he told me!  He guides in the Smoky Mountains, assisting his clients in catching Brook, Rainbow, and Brown Trout. His guiding service is called “On The Fly” Guide Service.  Since the trout found in these waters are so elusive, any suggestions and insider tips that Dave can give us will be greatly appreciated.  He is an entertaining speaker and an interesting story teller.  We look forward to having Dave back with us again this year.   Snacks and drinks will be provided.

“A Different Twist on Entomology”

Our presenter for this month is one of our own TU chapter members, Jim Herrig, who is a fisheries biologist with the U.S. Forest Service.  He will be providing the group with an update on the Tellico Watershed, including information regarding the conservation efforts and activities directed by the Forest Service toward waters within the Tellico Watershed.  This information will help bring the group up to speed for the upcoming brook trout survey to take place the next weekend.  Jim will also provide information about where to meet, what to bring, and what to expect regarding the brook trout survey.  Please attend this meeting as well as the brook trout survey.  As part of this presentation, Jim will also present information about specifically “how trout feed.”  One might say “The trout’s relationship to food.”  Jim is always an entertaining and informative speaker so plan to join us for this meeting.  Snacks and drinks will be provided.

“How to make handmade Silk Fly Lines”

This month we will have a special guest, Jonathon Busse from Knoxville, TN. Jonathon is reportedly the only person in the United States to make hand-made furled and braided silk fly lines. He will be presenting the process that he goes through in making a silk fly line in addition to discussing the advantages of using silk over plastic. He should have a fly rod available for anyone who would like to “test drive” a silk line. Jonathon possesses a wealth of information in the area of making and using silk fly lines. He also invented and built some of the tools and machines he uses for making silk fly lines in a uniform and consistent manner. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

This month’s meeting will be conducted by several of our members.  This will be especially fun for children and teenagers.  We will be providing free instruction in fly casting, rigging a rod properly, line mending, tandem rigging techniques, and how to read water.  Some contests are planned for casting with prizes, so you won’t want to miss this event.  Most likely we will also be demonstrating, but NOT teaching how to untangle your leader as well.  Please join us for some fun and make some contacts to plan your next fishing outing with a friend from TU.  Snacks and drinks will be provided.
