July 29th is the TU-TVA Cold Water Meeting in TVA's West Tower in Knoxville at 9:00 AM and will run till noon. After lunch, the TN Council will meet. Several Appalachian chapter members are planning on attending. You are welcome to attend this event. Steve Brown sent the following description: "The TU-TVA Coldwater meeting is a semi-annual gathering of all the take-holders in cold water fisheries, including TU, TVA, TWRA, the ational Forest Service, and sometimes the National Park, TDEC, TDOT, and he Corps of Engineers. The principle point is to keep each other informed. We talk about the current state of coldwater fisheries, and often have people invited to talk about a current problem. This year, I expect to show the first cut of the Back the Brookies DVD.
The Summer State Council meeting will be held in the afternoon, and the agenda includes council elections, and discussing a strategy for re-chartering all Tennessee Chapters (pursuant to the Chapter Focus Prject and the CEI that each chapter filled out last year)." |

The Highland Sportsman club contacted the chapter last week about participating in their Kids Day where kids learn about different types of hunting and fishing as well as organizations that help conserve the resources that make these sports possible. Roger Duckworth, Steve Fry, Pam Glasser, Debrah Prytula, Robert Prytula, Laura Wilson, and Robert Wilson, attended the event. We taught kids how to tie flies. We discussed very briefly entomology and why one would use a certain fly (using some of Dan Raley's flies as examples) and then taught the kids how to tie a woolly worm. The kids had a great time and thanks to those that were able to help on such short notice. |

For most fly fishers, the thought of getting away to a gin-clear stream, up in the mountains, away from civilization, is what they know and desire. They long for the fog on the water, masking the rising sun. They listen for the kingfishers through the gray still of the cool morning. The sound of birds waking up, the cool, wet air and the rush of a cold trout stream seems to put them at ease. I too, often desire this feeling and, as most, don’t seem to get enough of it. Monday through Friday is reserved for work and the weekends are often reserved for activities other than fishing. |

Hiwassee River - TVA is currently starting generation with one turbine at
10:00 a.m. and then two turbines from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. This is a
typical schedule for summer during drier than normal conditions. The pulsing during the night conserves water, and the two turbine flow during the day allows us to drift the river. |
