What: Appalachian Chapter of Trout Unlimited Meeting Where: Greenway Farm off of Gann Store Road in Hixson When: Thursday, September 17th, at 6:30 PM
“Flies and Lies: Fly Tying & Story Telling Expo” This month’s meeting will involve several presenters which will come from our own membership. Many of our members are accomplished fly tiers, and while I started to add respectable, thinking of several of us, I guess we better scratch that! Anyway, fly tying demonstrations are planned so come out and watch these individuals display their skills and talent. Since no one has been officially invited to do this, simply bring your own vise, supplies and tools, and tie some flies yourself. Just think, adding yourself to this motley crew will make it more “respectable.” But really, if you would like to learn to tie flies or simply to learn to perform a particular technique, several tiers will be prepared for this with extra materials, tools and vices. Of course for safety sake, we will be going strictly barb-less. Therefore, this event will be appropriate for children and teenagers, so pump them up and then bring them to the meeting at the peak of their energy and expectations. We will do our best not to disappoint them! The evening should be fun and relaxing. Also, feel free to bring a fishing story or two to informally share with the group, as everyone will be milling about watching the fly tying activities. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Don't forget the fish sampling schedule for September 26th. |

Wednesday, 26 August 2009 |
This is an update and a reminder about this weekend's fish sampling. Due to logistical issues, we won't be moving brookies from Sycamore Creek to Roaring Branch. We will electrofish McNabb, Rough Ridge, and Big Cove. After the sampling, Don Denny will do an insect sampling, looking at what kinds of bugs are in the stream and evaluating the water quality based on those bugs. In addition to sampling these streams for fish and bugs, Jim Herrig will bring wetsuits, masks, and snorkels and we'll look at the habitat from a fish's perspective Saturday afternoon in the North River. If you want to see where the trout really hang, bring a swim suit, towel, and wading shoes.

What: Appalachian Chapter of Trout Unlimited Meeting Where: Greenway Farm off of Gann Store Road in Hixson When: Thursday, August 20th, at 6:30 PM
Jim Herrig, a Forest Aquatic Biologist for the Cherokee National Forrest Service, will be the featured speaker. The topic will be the “20th Annual Brook Trout Restoration Project”. This is the 20th year of electrofishing Brook Trout streams in the Cherokee National Forrest. This year, we will sample three streams; Sycamore Creek, Big Cove, and Rough Ridge. Two crews will work Sycamore Creek, collecting Brook Trout and transferring them to Roaring Branch, always an exciting process. |
