To all of our fishing friends we wish a happy new year with this update on current conditions of our local waters. In general, our tailwaters and natural streams are in very good condition with adequate moisture. This is the first time I have been able to say this in a while. Local TVA lakes are 5-10 feet above last year’s levels. The next 90 days will offer some excellent opportunities, and with our mostly mild winters, we probably should be drifting more this time of year. I am expecting above average shad kills for all of our tailwaters this winter due to reports of healthy shad populations near the surface late winter on our major southeastern reservoirs. |

What: Appalachian Chapter of Trout Unlimited Meeting Where: Greenway Farm off of Gann Store Road in Hixson When: Thursday, October 16th, at 6:30 PM
“Flies and Lies: Fly Tying & Story Telling Expo” This month’s meeting will involve several presenters which will come from our own membership. Many of our members are accomplished fly tiers, and while I started to add respectable, thinking of several of us, I guess we better scratch that! Anyway, fly tying demonstrations are planned so come out and watch these individuals display their skills and talent. Since no one has been officially invited to do this, simply bring your own vice, supplies and tools, and tie some flies yourself. Just think, adding yourself to this motley crew will make it more “respectable.” But really, if you would like to learn to tie flies or simply to learn to perform a particular technique, several tiers will be prepared for this with extra materials, tools and vices. Of course for safety sake, we will be going strictly barb-less. Therefore, this event will be appropriate for children and teenagers, so pump them up and then bring them to the meeting at the peak of their energy and expectations. We will do our best not to disappoint them! The evening should be fun and relaxing. Also, feel free to bring a fishing story or two to informally share with the group, as everyone will be milling about watching the fly tying activities. Snacks and drinks will be provided. |
