Donations Made for Chapter Education
Sunday, 16 July 2006

ImageThe Appalachian Chapter's education programs are made possible through equipment and time donations. Recently, the club was contact by Dan Raley about donating some trout fishing gear. Unfotunately, Dan has moved to a location where there aren't cold water trout. Fortunately for us, Dan has donated some of his gear to the chapter's education programs. His donations include a St Croix rod with a Battenkill reel,  various fly boxes (including flies), and a Simms vest. Thanks to Dan for his gracious donation.

Etowah Fishing Expo
Monday, 12 June 2006

ImageOn August 5th and 6th, the Hiwassee Chapter of Trout Unlimted in cooperation with the Etowah Merchant's Association is having the First Annual Etowah Fishing Expo. The expo will have demonstrations, vendors, crafts, food, entertainment, and more. Money made by TU will go towards continuing the Hiwassee Chapter's First Cast and their new Trout in the Classroom programs.

To help fund the Fishing Expo event, they will have a fish fry on Saturday the 24th of  June between 11 AM and 3 PM at the L&N Railroad Depot in Etowah, TN. This fish fry goes along with Etowah's Centenial Parade and celebration. Cost is $6 per plate. We'll have tickets available at our chapter's meeting.

They need help running their fish fry. They need concession workers, runners, and anything else that comes up. Laura and I are planning on volunteering.  If you are interested in helping, contact Don Denny at  423-478-5451 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Sugar Cove - June 2006 Stream of the Month
Thursday, 01 June 2006

 sugarfalls2

Abstract: Sugar Cove is a tributary stream to the North River in the Cherokee National Forest.  For most of its fishable length, Sugar Cove is 15 to 20 feet wide with many pools up to 3 feet deep.  There is one major waterfall that is preceded by a bedrock slide.  The combination makes for one of the most beautiful streams on the forest. Brook (northern strain) and rainbow trout are present below the falls with only brookies found above it. The hiking trail beside the stream above the bridge is in fairly good condition. Most of the trail is flat until the last half mile (well above fishable water) where it becomes very steep (several switchbacks).

THE Question
Monday, 12 June 2006
ImageYou are on an island with your fly rod.  You can only bring one fly.  What would you bring?

This question was probably posed to Sir Izaak Walton himself in the beginning of fly fishing and has been around for a very long time.  It is the ultimate hypothetical and philosophical question.  No one can answer this question with certainty.

Why do I bring this up?  I need to think about the question for a specific reason… a one-fly contest.
